Ancient City of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka

Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka 360 virtual reality tour

The 360-degree virtual reality tour of Polonnaruwa, one of the UNESCO heritage sites in Sri Lanka helps us to experience the place before we reach there.

Polonnaruwa is an ancient city in Sri Lanka and forms part of the “Cultural Triangle” along with Sigiriya, Anuradhapura, Kandy, and Dambulla. It served as the capital city for nearly 2 centuries between the 11th and 13th centuries AD and is an incredible day trip destination in Sri Lanka.

Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993. It comprises, besides the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas, the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. Polonnaruwa is the main town of Polonnaruwa District in North Central Province, Sri Lanka.

The second most ancient of Sri Lanka’s kingdoms, Polonnaruwa was first declared the capital city by King Vijayabahu I, who defeated Chola invaders in 1070 to reunite the country once more under a local leader. The Ancient City of Polonnaruwa has been declared a  UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History of Polonnaruwa

While Vijayabahu’s victory and shifting of kingdoms to the more strategic Polonnaruwa are considered significant, the real “Hero of Polonnaruwa” of the history books is actually Parakramabahu I. It was his reign that is considered the Golden Age of Polonnaruwa. Hence, irrigation systems that are far superior to those of the Anuradhapura Age were constructed during Parakramabahu’s reign – systems which to this day supply the water necessary for paddy cultivation during the scorching dry season in the east of the country.
