Sigiriya, often called the "Lion Rock," is an ancient rock fortress and palace located in the Matale District of Sri Lanka. This massive granite column rises approximately 180 meters (590 ft) above the surrounding jungle, making it a prominent and unforgettable landmark. History and Significance
The history of Sigiriya is tied to a dramatic tale from the 5th century CE. According to the ancient Sri Lankan chronicle, the Cūḷavaṃsa, the site was chosen by King Kassapa I (reigned 477–495 CE) as his new capital. After usurping the throne from his father and fearing an attack from his brother, the rightful heir, Kassapa built a formidable and highly defensible palace on top of the rock.
The name "Sigiriya" is derived from "Sinhagiri," meaning "Lion Rock," and it gets its name from a colossal lion figure that once guarded the entrance to the final ascent. While only the giant paws of the lion remain today, they offer a glimpse into the grandeur of the original structure.
After Kassapa's defeat, the site was abandoned as a royal residence and was later used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century before being mysteriously abandoned.

The Frescoes: About halfway up the rock, a sheltered gallery holds a series of beautifully preserved frescoes. These vibrant paintings of female figures, often believed to represent celestial beings or royal consorts, are a highlight of the site and a masterpiece of ancient Sri Lankan art.
The Summit: The climb to the top of the rock leads to the ruins of the king's palace. From the summit, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the remains of the ancient citadel.
