The 58-foot monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali, also known as Gommateshwara, is one of India’s most remarkable spiritual and architectural monuments. It stands majestically at Shravanabelagola in Karnataka and is deeply revered by followers of Jainism. Carved from a single block of granite, the statue represents Lord Bahubali, the son of Rishabhanatha, the first Jain Tirthankara.
The statue is famous not only for its great height but also for its calm and powerful expression. Lord Bahubali is shown standing in the kayotsarga posture, a meditative pose symbolizing complete detachment from worldly desires. Creepers are carved around his legs, suggesting that he stood in meditation for so long that nature began to grow around him. This image reflects patience, self-control, renunciation, and inner victory.
Built in 981 CE by the Ganga minister and commander Chavundaraya, the statue remains an outstanding example of ancient Indian craftsmanship. Despite being over a thousand years old, it continues to inspire visitors with its simplicity, balance, and spiritual presence.
Every twelve years, the Mahamastakabhisheka ceremony is held, during which the statue is bathed with water, milk, saffron, sandalwood paste, and other sacred offerings. Thousands of pilgrims and tourists gather to witness this grand event.
