Unlike many North Indian mosques, Kuttichira Juma Mosque follows the traditional Kerala style of architecture. Its sloping tiled roof, timber work, spacious prayer hall, and simple exterior show how Islamic faith blended beautifully with local building traditions. The mosque is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of Kozhikode’s peaceful cultural history.
For centuries, the mosque has served as a centre for Friday prayers, religious learning, community gatherings, and social life. Mishkal Mosque, also known as Mithqal Mosque, is one of the most admired heritage mosques in Kozhikode, Kerala. It is located in Kuttichira, the old Muslim quarter of Calicut, an area deeply connected with Arab trade and the maritime history of the Malabar Coast. The mosque is believed to be more than 650 years old and was built by Nakhooda Mishkal, a wealthy Arab merchant.
Unlike many later mosques, Mishkal Mosque does not depend on domes or tall minarets for its beauty. Its charm lies in the traditional Kerala-Islamic style: timber construction, sloping tiled roofs, carved wooden pillars, and a grand multi-storeyed form.
It was once a five-storeyed structure, but after damage during a Portuguese attack in 1510, it was restored with the support of the Zamorin of Calicut. Today, the four-storeyed mosque stands as a symbol of Kozhikode’s trade links, craftsmanship, and communal harmony. For visitors, Mishkal Mosque offers a powerful glimpse into the cultural blend that shaped medieval Malabar.
Muchundi Mosque, also called Muchundi Palli or Muccunti Palli, is among the oldest mosques in Kozhikode city. Located in Kuttichira, close to Mishkal Mosque and the Kuttichira tank, it is believed to date back to the 13th century.
The mosque is especially important because of its historical inscriptions, including a granite inscription connected with an endowment made by the Zamorin of Calicut.
The mosque was established by Shahab al-din Raihan and reflects the early relationship between Muslim traders and local rulers in Kerala. Architecturally, Muchundi Mosque follows the old Kerala-Islamic style, with no domes, minarets, or large arches. Its wooden ceiling, carved details, and traditional form show how mosque architecture in Malabar adapted local building techniques.
Muchundi Mosque is not only a place of worship, but also a rare historical record of Kozhikode’s multicultural past. It quietly preserves the story of trade, faith, and cooperation that made Calicut one of the great ports of the Indian Ocean.
