Since 1968 the college has been functioning as a port of knowledge. The College has played, a crucial role in the transformation of academic profile of Ponnani, and has been active in the progress of Ponnani especially in the women’s education and empowerment of fisherman community.
With an excellence of 53 years, our college has become triumphant in recovering and rejuvenating the lost glory of Ponnani. The college offers, three Ph. D programmes, five PG, and ten UG programmes. 26 faculty members are Ph. D holders, and there are 15 research guides, and 30 research scholars. The college is a partner institution of IIC, under Ministry of Education. The college has 48 linkages, and 81 collaborations, with eminent institutions. The college has taken great leap in learning and research activities with significant advancement.
The college offers, various skill development programmes, which provide the students for their higher education and cater employability. The college has state of the art facilities to help the students to achieve more in their learning process. The college has adequate number of spacious classrooms, highly equipped labs like petrology lab, museums, hatchery, research rooms, and seminar halls, to carry out academic activities. All classrooms and laboratories are ICT-enabled, with LCD projectors, to integrate technology, in the teaching-learning process. Premarital counselling centre, under minority welfare department, government of Kerala, functions within the campus
Pathemari heritage museum states, the rich cultural yore of Ponnani, give the students, and the public, with an opportunity, to travel back, to the glorious past of this historical land. It documents and preserves the diverse social, political, cultural and literary tradition of Ponnani and suburbs. Pathemari presents the miniature of Ponnani, its life and customs, its habitat and other factors that have been influential in determining the culture of Ponnani. Pathemari offers people with an opportunity to comprehend and appreciate the different aspects of Ponnani life including its traditional art, cultural forms, costumes, livelihood etc.
The college has well-maintained computer labs, network resource centres with195 computers, well-equipped language lab, e-content development centre, and a recording and editing studio. The ‘Deep Focus’ audio-visual theatre provides facility to watch films and documentaries. 'Thira' the campus radio, not only entertains the students, but gives them an opportunity, to exhibit their artistic talents.
WHALE SKELTON
A giant Bryde's whale skeleton exhibited in the college campus. The 70feet finback arrived at M E S Ponnani Colleges' Zoology department 40 years ago in 1971, after washing up dead on Ponnani beach.
Our college campus has a beautiful Herbal Garden, which is a living museum of different varieties of medicinal plants including rare and medicinal plant species. The herbal garden lies with the descriptive labels with their botanical names, vernacular names displayed for the different sections and plants. The herbal garden is helpful for the students in knowing taxonomic knowledge and identification of the local plants. In addition, they promote relaxation; maintain a healthy mind in the surrounding environment. The diverse collection of plant species facilitates visitors to experience new plants and enables opportunities for learning.
The herbal garden provides valuable information on various plants and act as outer laboratory for students and scientific researchers. The institution focuses on promoting the eco consciousness and sustainability practices and has accordingly chalked out a series of activities to enlighten the students of their environmental responsibility
The Aquatic Biodiversity Museum is rich with various collections of species that are well catalogued and displayed. The Museum offers a glimpse of biodiversity of the Indian aquatic ecosystem displaying specimens collected from fresh water, estuaries, coastal and deeper waters.
The collections, arranged systematically for a better understanding of the resources, attracts students, teachers, scientists and the general public. There are also various models of dried specimens and craft and gear materials.
The college library started in 1968 have an excellent collection of about 38000 books, journals, magazines and digital resources with access to 31 lakhs e -book, collection of rare books, including thaliyolas apart from that it also inculcate special collection bearing the legacy of Ponnani .
College library is named after E Moidu Moulavi, one of the prominent freedom fighter, social reformer, scholar and educationist of Malabar District, born at Maranchery in Ponnani. Library has spacious interior with a large reading area to accommodate 150 students at a time.
The department started in 1995 to cater to do the needs of students aspiring to higher studies in the field of fisheries and Aquaculture. An Add on course entitled” Commercial production of Ornamental Fishes” has also been conducted with assistance from UGC. The department was elevated to a research Centre in 2006 and the department offers Ph.D. programs in the field of Fisheries and aquaculture. Four research scholars have been awarded Ph.D. so far. It is the only department under Calicut University offering Ph.D. program in aquaculture and allied subjects.
Department supervises a well-equipped hatchery unit with 24 acrylic tanks of 1 ton capacity for holding the fishes and 10 cylindrical tanks for live feed culture. There are cisterns of various size for breeding and rearing fish in the hatchery. Different species of Ornamental fishes and Ornamental plants are kept in the hatchery for breeding and rearing experiments. Students of the department are given on hand training in breeding fishes and aquarium keeping.
The fitness centre is functioning under the guidance of the Department of Physical Education to promote health and fitness among students and staff. It aims to develop students’ physical competence and knowledge of movement and safety, and their ability to use these to perform in a wide range of activities associated with the development of an active and healthy lifestyle.
The physical education department of the college from its inception in the year 1968 carved a great legacy of creating national and state players. It has adequate amenities including Kabadi court, badminton court, cricket net practice pitch, volleyball court, football ground, soft tennis, and badminton court, yoga-practicing arena, and tug of war court.
The well-equipped fitness centre, working in the sports complex, is really helpful to the teachers and students, in their fitness drive. The vast college ground is the location for conducting, sports and games competitions and practice.
Thus, seen from all angles, M E S Ponnani College, is resolutely and steadily marching towards excellence, and its reflections are visible in the progress, Ponnani has achieved in all walks. Like the full breadth and depth of the ocean, like the nourishing traditional culture of Nila, Ponnani’s past, present, and future are inseparably tied to M E S Ponnani College.
