A huge dome rises in the middle of the main prayer hall, comparable to the largest domes of the most luxurious mosques. The height of the dome above the ground is 43m. The dome is made of 2 layers, an outer dome and the inner dome with a passage in between and carries 144 windows.
The center of the dome shows a sun with 33 extended rays. Each ray contains 3 of Gods names or attributes, written in Fatimid Kufic script in white color on a ground of blue Isfahani ceramics. As for the neck of the dome, it bears three Quranic verses from the chapter of Ghafir, written in Thuluth script, 80 meters long, on Isfahani ceramics inlaid with pieces of lapis lazuli gemstone.

ترتفـع وســط المصلى الرئيسي قبة ضخمة تضاهي أضخــم قباب المساجد الفخمة، فارتفاعها عــن أرض المســجد يصــل أعلاه إلــى 43م، وتتكون القبة من طبقتين، طبقة خارجية وداخلية وبينهما ممر، ويبلغ مجموع عدد الشبابيك فــي كلتا الطبقتين 144 شــباك وقطرها 26م، تحملها أعمدة أربعة طــول كل منهــا 22 م وهو طول المصلى الرئيسي.
وفــي سـرة القبة يتمركز قـرص الشـمس بأشعته الــ 33 الممتدة، حيـث يحتـوي كل شـعاع علـى 3 مـن أسـماء الله الحسـنى خُط بالخط الكوفي الفاطمي باللـون الأبيض علــى أرضيـة مــن السـيراميك الأصفهاني الأزرق. أما عنق القبة، فيحمل ثلاث آيات من سورة غافر خطت بخط الثلث بطول 80م على بالسيراميك الأصفهاني المعشق بحجر اللازورد.

His Highness, the Amir of the State of Kuwait, has a private hall in the Grand Mosque, decorated with inscriptions, calligraphy, Moroccan cut tiles, and muqarnas (a type of Islamic ornamentation). It is located on the northwest side of the Grand Mosque and has a private entrance from the western side.
The hall is used as a reception area for the Amir, his guests and visiting dignitaries. The room can accommodate 80 people and is characterized by containing a replica of a copy of a Quran written during the reign of the Rashidun Caliph Uthman Bin Affan, may God be pleased with him. Inscribed on the walls of the hall are phrases of thikr (traditional remembrance) supplications written in the Diwani (Royal) font.

لصاحب السمو أمير دولة الكويت قاعة خاصة في المسجد الكبير زينت بالنقوش والخطوط والزليج المغربي والمقرنصات وتقع بالجانب الشمالي الغربي للمصلى الكبير، ولها مدخل خاص من الجهة الغربية. تستعمل القاعة للاستراحة واستقبال ضيوف صاحب السمو وتسع لـ80 شخصًا. تتميز هذه القاعة باحتوائها على نسخة من مصحف خُط في عهد الخليفة الراشدي عثمان بن عفان رضي الله عنه. كما خطت على جدران القاعة عبارات ذكر بالخط الديواني.

In the Arabic language, the word mihrab (niche) means the front of the house, and it is the place where the Imam stands for leading the prayer. It has a semi-circular shape and is located in the middle of the Qibla wall.
The niche was mentioned 4 times in the Holy Quran, including the Almighty’s saying:” Whenever Zakariya entered the niche, he found with her provision” (Al Imran: 37). The first person to introduce the hollow niche in mosques was the Umayyad Caliph Umar Bin Abdulaziz in the year 87 AH/706 AD.
The Grand mosque has 8 niches, 7 of which are polygonal. As for the main niche in the middle of the western wall of the mosque, it is the only circular niche, as this feature allows the sound to bounce back to the dome and then spread throughout the mosque.
The niche is covered with gypsum and Moroccan cut tiles. It is topped with versus from the Holy Quran written in various types of Arabic calligraphy. Its sides are flanked by two Greek columns covered with Italian Carrara marble.
المحراب
لغويًا، كلمة المحراب تعني صدر البيت وهو المكان الذي يقف فيه الإمام للصلاة، وشكله نصف دائري مهم ويقع وسط جدار القبلة. وقد ذكر المحراب في القرآن الكريم أربعة مرات منها قوله تعالى (كلما دخل عليها زكريا المحراب وجد عندها رزقًا) (آل عمران:27 ). وأول من أحدث المحراب المجوف في المساجد هو الخليفة الأموي عمر بن عبد العزيز عام 87 هـ\ 706م.
للمسجد الكبير ثمانية محاريب، سبعٌ منها مضلعة. أما المحراب الرئيسي الذي ينتصف الجدار الغربي للمسجد فهو المحراب الدائري الوحيد، حيث تسمح هذه الخاصية بارتداد الصوت إلى القبة ومن ثم انتشاره في أنحاء المسجد. يكسو المحراب الجبس ومن ثم الزليج المغربي، وتعلوه آيات من القرآن الكريم خُطت بأنواع متعددة من الخط العربي ويحف جانبيه عامودان إغريقيّان مكسوّان برخام الكرارة الإيطالي.

Located all around the mosque are 82 German chandeliers. The wall chandeliers are made of flaky crystals while the hanging chandeliers are made of pure clear crystals.

تنتشر في أرجاء المسجد الكبير ثريات ألمانية عددها 82 ثـريـة حائطية وسقفية، زجاجها من الكريستال بعضها شفاف وبعضها الآخر ثلجي.

Mashrabiyas are wooden windows with an ancient Islamic design formed in symmetrical geometric shapes. They offer privacy, as it allows women to see the Imam and allow for light and air ventilation. The name mashrabiya is derived from the word shariba or to drink, as the owners of the houses in which mashrabiyas are found used to keep bottles of water near the mashrabiya so that the air flowing into the house would cool the water. There are 11 mashrabiyas in the Grand Mosque covering the Ladies’ Hall overlooking the Main Prayer Hall.
المشربيات
المشربيات هي نوافذ خشبية بتصميم إسلامي قديم مشكل بأشكال هندسية متناسقة لأغراض عدة، منها الخصوصية حيث يمكن للنساء من خلفها رؤية الإمام، كما تسمح بمرور الهواء من خلال فتحاتها. تأتي كلمة مشربية من أصل شرب، حيث كان يحتفظ أصحاب البيوت بقناني المياه عند المشربية حتى يقوم تيار الهواء الداخل إلى المنزل من خلالها بتبريد الماء. وتوجد 11 مشربية في المسجد الكبير تغطي مصلى النساء في جهته المطلة على المصلى الرئيسي.

Named minbar (pulpit) because of its height, the idea of the pulpit in the mosques began with the trunk of a palm tree on which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to lean when he delivered his sermons.
Then, its forms and the materials from which it was made varied, some of which were made of wood and stone. The pulpit of the Grand Mosque is made of Indian teak wood, and its entrance is to the left of the niche, and its height is 3 meters. Its entrance is symmetrical in shape when compared to the platform; the two are connected with a 14-step stairway.
المنبر
سُمي بالمنبر لارتفاعه وعلوه، ابتدأت فكرة المنابر في المساجد من جذع نخلة كان يستند إليها النبي عليه الصلاة والسلام حين كان يلقي خُطَبَهُ، ثم تعددت أشكالها ومواد صنعها فصنع بعضها من الخشب والحجر.
ومنبر المسجد الكبير مصنوع من خشب الساج الهندي، ومدخله يسار المحراب وارتفاعه 3م، حيث يناظر المدخلُ المنصة في الشكل والطول، ويلي باب المدخل سلم خلف المحراب مكون من 14 درجة يصل المدخل بمنصة المحراب.

The idea of establishing this majestic Islamic building came from the late Amir Sheikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah (may God have mercy on him) after the Old Souk Mosque became too crowded with worshippers on public occasions that witnessed an official presence. This necessitated the need to build another larger and newer mosque that would accommodate the large number of worshipers. Equipped with all the administrative and technical services, it would become the most prominent Islamic landmark in Kuwait.
The Grand Mosque is located in Kuwait City next to Al Seif Palace. Its construction began in 1979 and was open to the public in 1986. It was designed by the Iraqi architect Dr. Mohammad Makiya, who specialized in Islamic architecture. He designed the mosque based on the architectural model of mosques in the Arabian Peninsula. It contains various architectural elements and materials from different countries of the world. The mosque covers an area of 45,000 m2. Construction of the mosque involved 50 architects, 450 construction worker and cost around 14 million KD.

جاءت فكرة إنشاء هذا الصرح الإسلامي الشامخ بمبادرة سامية من الأمير الراحل الشيخ جابر الأحمد الجابر الصباح (رحمه الله) بعد أن ضاق (مسجد السوق الكبير) بالمصلين في المناسبات العامة التي تشهد حضورًا رسميًا مما استدعى ضرورة بناء مسجد آخر أكبر وأحدث يستوعب الأعداد الغفيرة من المصلين مع تجهيزه بكافة الخدمات الإدارية والفنية، ليصبح أبرز المعالم الإسلامية في الكويت.
يقع المسجد الكبير في مدينة الكويت بجانب قصر الحكم (قصر السيف) وقد بدأ بناؤه عام 1979 وافتتح عام 1986 وكان تصميمه تحت إشراف المعماري العراقي د.محمد مكية (رحمه الله) المتخصص في العمارة الإسلامية حيث صمم المسجد بناءً على النموذج المعماري لمساجد شبه الجزيرة العربية جامعًا فيه عناصر ومواد معمارية مختلفة من مختلف دول العالم. تبلغ مساحة 45 ألف م²، وقام ببنائه 50 مهندسًا و450 عاملًا وقد بلغت تكلفة إنشائه آنذاك قرابة الـ14 مليون دينار كويتي.
وفي عام 2013، أُغلق المصلى الرئيسي لأعمال الصيانة الجذرية، فتم خلالها إعادة تصميم المصلى الذي تم على يد المعماري الفرنسي بول فيكتور. أضاف فيكتور تصميم وردة متفتحة حول القبة مع أربع ورقات خارجة من عواميد المصلى.

The main prayer hall in the Grand Mosque is a square shaped hall. Its side length is 72m and is built on four pillars and can accommodate around 10,000 worshipers.
Its walls are decorated with Moroccan mosaic, gypsum, marble and natural stone. The hall is 22m high. Its floors are covered with carpets that combine blue and yellow colors representing the old inhabitants of Kuwait; the people of the land and the sea. The sides of the main prayer hall are illuminated by 138 French windows and 44 glass domes.

بيت الصلاة الرئيسي في المسجد الكبير مربع الشكل طول ضلعه 72 مترًا، وهو مقام على أربع عمدة ويتسع لـ10 آلاف مصل. زينت جدرانه بالزليج والجبس المغربي والرخام والحجر الطبيعي، ويبلغ ارتفاعه 22 مترًا وتحيط بسطحه الشرفات، بينما يغطي أرضه سجاد جمع بين اللونين الأزرق والأصفر إشارة إلى أهل البحر والبر من سكان الكويت القدامى، وتضيء جوانبه 138 نافذة فرنسية تعلوها 44 قبة زجاجية.

There are 23 beautiful Damascene chandeliers that have an Islamic style hanging in the liwan (corridor facing the Mosque’s building) of the Grand Mosque. They are located in the main liwan and are similar to the ones in the Prophet’s Mosque. They are made of oxidized brass and each weigh350 kg.

ترتفع في ليوان المسجد الكبير ثريات دمشقية رائعة، عددها 23 ثرية ذات طراز إسلامي. وتقع في الليوان الرئيسي، كما يوجد مثيلها في المسجد النبوي الشريف، وهي مصنوعة من النحاس الأصفر المؤكسد، تزن الواحدة 350 كجم.

There are many types of minarets like the square, polygonal and cylindrical. Their original purpose is to deliver the sound of the call to prayer as far as possible. The Grand Mosques’ minaret has a polygonal (12 ribbed) shape that is 72m2 height and is covered with Syrian stone brought from Tartous, and has its own elevator.
المئذنة
أنواع المآذن كثيرة، منها المربع والمضلع والأسطواني، والهدف منها في الأصل هو توصيل صوت الأذان لأبعد نقطة ممكنة. للمسجد الكبير مئذنة طولها 72م وهي مضلعة الشكل (12 ضلع) مكسوة بالحجر السوري المجلوب من طرطوس ولها مصعد خاص.
