The Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in central Sri Lanka. It is a large and well-preserved cave temple complex that has been a significant center of Buddhist worship and pilgrimage for over two millennia.
Historical Significance
The history of the Dambulla Cave Temple is deeply intertwined with the history of Sri Lanka. The caves were inhabited by forest-dwelling Buddhist monks as early as the 3rd century BCE. The site's most notable period of transformation began in the 1st century BCE under King Valagamba (also known as Vattagamani Abhaya) of Anuradhapura. After being exiled by South Indian invaders, he took refuge in these caves for 14 years. Upon regaining his throne, he converted the caves into magnificent Buddhist temples in a gesture of gratitude.
Over the centuries, various kings and devotees added to the complex. A significant phase of development occurred in the 12th century when King Nissanka Malla had 70 Buddha statues gilded, giving the site its name, "Ran Giri," or Golden Rock. The current appearance of the caves, particularly the vibrant murals, largely dates back to the 18th century during the reign of the Kandyan kings, who restored and repainted the interiors.

The Dambulla Cave Temple is a marvel of ancient art and architecture, with its main attractions spread across five major caves:
Cave of the Divine King (Devaraja Lena): This cave is dominated by a stunning 14-meter-long reclining Buddha statue, which depicts the Buddha in his final passing away (Parinirvana). At his feet is a statue of his devoted disciple, Ananda, and at his head, a statue of the god Vishnu.
Cave of the Great Kings (Maharaja Lena): This is the largest and most impressive cave, featuring an astonishing collection of over 50 statues, including those of King Valagamba and King Nissanka Malla. The cave's walls and ceiling are covered with magnificent murals that narrate scenes from the Buddha's life and important events in Sri Lankan history.
Great New Monastery (Maha Alut Viharaya): This cave, restored in the 18th century, contains vibrant murals in the Kandyian style and numerous Buddha statues, showcasing the evolution of Buddhist art.
Western Cave (Pachima Viharaya): A smaller cave that houses a beautiful seated Buddha statue and intricate floral designs on its ceiling.
Second New Monastery (Devana Alut Viharaya): This cave is the most recent addition, featuring several statues, including one of a Hindu deity, reflecting the blend of cultural influences in Sri Lanka.
In total, the complex contains 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings, and four statues of gods and goddesses, including Vishnu and Ganesha. The murals cover an expansive area of 2,100 square meters, making it one of the largest collections of Buddhist paintings in the world. The artistry is notable for its use of natural pigments and a unique blend of Indian and Sri Lankan artistic styles.
The Dambulla Cave Temple is a living monastery, and its preservation and management are overseen by the Asgiriya Chapter of Buddhist monks in collaboration with the Department of Archaeology of the Government of Sri Lanka. Its continuous use as a sacred site for more than two millennia underscores its enduring spiritual and cultural importance.
