The Seetha Amman Temple is a significant Hindu temple located in the village of Seetha Eliya, near Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. It is a key site on the Ramayana Trail, a pilgrimage route that connects locations related to the Hindu epic.
History and Significance:
The temple is believed to be the only one in the world dedicated to Sita, the wife of Lord Rama.
According to the Ramayana, this is the location where Sita was held captive by the demon king Ravana after her abduction.
A stream flows beside the temple, which is said to be where Sita bathed and prayed during her captivity.
Footprints of varying sizes, believed to be those of the monkey-god Hanuman, are visible on rocks near the stream. This is said to relate to Hanuman's ability to change his size, as mentioned in the Ramayana.
The black color of the soil in the area is believed to be a result of Hanuman burning down the area before he left Sri Lanka.
Idols of Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita were discovered in the stream about a century ago, and it is believed they have been worshipped for centuries.
Visiting the Temple:
The temple is located approximately 5 km from Nuwara Eliya and about 1 km from the Hakgala Botanical Garden, which is believed to be part of the ancient Ashoka Vatika where Sita was held.
The temple is open to visitors every day. The morning hours are from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and the evening hours are from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM.
There is no entrance fee, but donations are appreciated.
Visitors are advised to dress modestly, covering their knees and shoulders, as it is a religious site.
